And back to life. We had a lovely vacation and I hope you all had a great holiday as well...AND are still having one. Being in the retail world I was swamped the past two weeks and I'm beat. Yesterday we had our first Chow family Christmas. Just me and my lady. We started some new traditions, continued some old family ones and ate till we were beyond full. Moving On Up

The Mrs. and I are prepping to move. I'm hunkering down and trying to cover internet, gas, electric and etc...and etc...

We move Wednesday morning and then hopefully over the next week we'll settle into our new abode. We're pretty excited for the savings. It's right up the street as well, so there's no real adjustment to environment or "getting to know our surroundings." Once we (and by we I mean my wife) figures out where everything is to be placed, I'll share pictures.

This weekend was spent participating in debauchery at the USC homecoming festivities and then driving to San Diego for the day to see Poppa Frank. I'm exhausted from the trip, but it was worth it since I won't be seeing him over the holidays at all. Did I mention I love San Diego?

Anyway, just wanted to stop in, say hello and give you all an update. Till next time...RAGE ON!

It's clear we're still dealing with the same Republican party. Mostly likely it will take time before the self-implode...if they ever. I didn't think they change over night, however Boehner today did sound more defeated than normal. I'm almost certain he knows he's losing his job. Wow. I needed a day off after Tuesday night. I may or may not have drank just a tad too much bubbly after the election was called for President Barack Obama. Now it's back to work. It's back to changing this great nation bit by bit. The first priority should be creating jobs and finishing what the administration started four years ago, recovery. It's going to be interesting to watch the GOP figure out what there next move will be. Their Black Jimmy Carter approach was thwarted clearly by the American people on Tuesday. There might be an ugly in-fight coming up over the next couple of years. I have a inkling they're going to have to jump off the crazy cliff before ever coming back to America. Well the Mrs. and I voted. After about an hour or so of waiting, we went to the archaic little set up and did the damn thing. I'm now going to try to avoid tv, Twitter and Facebook for much of the day. Hopefully, I'll get some writing done. It all comes down to tonight's results...what I'm feeling is Obama will be reelected and this blog will go back to thwarting ridiculous right-wing conspiracies. I hope that feeling is right. It's that time of year where we inch closer to election day. I'm a tad bit nervous, but after Obama's response to Hurricane Sandy I think Obama will be reelected. The most recent swing states seem to be aligning for a tight Obama victory and an almost certain right-wing meltdown. Romney as we've come to the finish line, as suspected, is not a strong closer offering little real "momentum". I don't look forward to the media response if Obama wins. By the way this election cycle developed it stands to reason they'll call the election result a call for Obama to go further to the mystical center. They'll ask for more austerity, bipartisanship and hurt for the less fortunate. And TAX CUTS! I say if Obama is reelected he should treat it is a mandate for his agenda. Republicans and Rape Talks

I've decided to become a Catholic. It has been a rather long journey. A search of my soul, my spirit and my faith. I and I alone have come to this decision. The past month I've been attending mass with a group of fellow adults embarking on the same journey. Every Monday, that work permits, I attend a class for an hour and half. We talk and chat about the Bible, Jesus, God, the Disciples, the Church, traditions, specific verses; we dig deeper each class. It has been trying. I won't lie at times I've wanted to quit, yet something compels me to continue. I have faith it's the right path for me at this time. And although I don't always agree with various teachings or leanings; I know it is the right thing to do.

So when I read things like this it troubles me. It makes me sad and it's the exact opposite of what I've learned thus far:

Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock became the latest Republican to wander into eyebrow-raising territory when it came to the discussion of rape and abortion during a Senate debate Tuesday night.

Defending his stance that abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape, Mourdock explained that pregnancy resulting from nonconsensual sex is the will of God.

“I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God,” Mourdock said. “And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

They must be chatting with a different "Big Guy."

Computer and Life Update

Today was not a "day off." I spent my morning at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store. It's sterile and hipster vibe enveloped me in a string of bad reports about the state of my computer. The kid who helped me was kind enough, but couldn't for the life of him figure out how and why my computer was in such an utter state of ruin. There's something creepy about the Apple store once you've sat there for more than 15 minutes. Is this what we've become? I could've easily spent the rest of my day there simply name dropping indie/hipster bands gathering an audience of kids eager to compare playlists. In other words, the Genius Bar didn't have enough genius. They couldn't fix my computer.

I did, however, wisely set up coffee with an acting/writing friend to follow the lack of genius. A fellow Chicagoan and Middle-American; it was great to catch up and bounce off ideas with him. It amazes me how if two creative people sit down with common interests electricity occurs. We chatted for a rather long time about Hollywood, reflecting on our first years out in the "scene", auditions and the many draw backs of this town. We're cynical Midwesterners, sue us! It ended up being the beginning of hopefully many new projects. We both are tired of waiting around for agents or the right gig, instead we're going to start creating on our own. So, in time we'll be making a new original web-series and hopefully much much much more after. It's why we moved here, so why wait for someone else to cast us? Time to cast ourselves. It's going to take some grinding, but I'm confident we're doing the right thing and it's going to be a fun time making it all happen. Then I had the awesome idea to take my computer to the MacMall...

MacMall is a store that looks like it originated at the dawn of computers. A grey nondescript building with "MacMall" in a sort of Microsoft Word font. I first decided to scope the place out and see if my computer would survive inside this Kevin Smith like creation. I walked in and immediately I was on the set of 40 Year Old Virgin. After a brief walk around I bolted for the door, but then a salesman asked what I was in for and I took the bait. I explained my current computer death situation and he said they could easily fix it for $120. I was astonished and relieved. A knight. I had met a MacMall knight...or so I thought.

I quickly went home, grabbed my wounded IMac and returned to the MacMall. I spoke with the same guy, he's a guy now let's be honest the "knight" thing was a moment of weakness, and I set my computer on the counter. After some diagnostics and jedi-MacMall tricks I was in the hole for more than twice as quoted and my computer was in the hands of an extra from Mall Rats. Somehow I felt I left with a bit of pride since I unknowingly talked the guy into giving me extra RAM for half price. Who knew? What is RAM? Despite my race I don't get computers! I exited the MacMall, my computer hopefully, in good hands and a whole lot poorer.

Today was an atypical day off with a silver-lining. In the words of ole blue eyes, "that's life."

At a Total Loss

I've spent most of my day working my ass off. I don't get paid much for the amount of work I put in, it's frustrating and I'm quite exhausted. (Apologies for my time away of late) So when I arrived at my humble abode tonight I had every intention to sit and type. I wanted to write tonight about education in America, about television and writing Asian-American characters; I wanted to write about affirmative action and white privilege, about the election and being a part of the "other" 47%. Alas, tonight I won't write about any of those things. Instead, I'm stuck on music. Music that inspires, challenges and in a way haunts me at this moment.

I say haunt because when you listen to an album sometimes you come to a realization that you've yet to reach your potential. It challenges you because when you hear its intricacies you cringe at the thought of what more you could be doing at this very instant. You hear every note, the subtlest tones and each has an uncanny ability to inspire. I'm at a "Total Loss."

How to Dress Well - Total Loss

Listen. This is the kind of album that makes me want to create.

I will try to write tonight. I will try to be this good at what I do daily, but it's unequivocally clear, I've got work to do.

Get Your Dunkin Tuesday

I've been battling an eye twitch. From my studies, it's most likely due to two things 1) stress and 2) sleep deprivation. It's been bothering me now for over a week...I correct that statement it's been annoying the hell out of me for over a week. If anyone has any remedies other than the obvious SLEEP YOU MORON, let me know. I hope everyone had a lovely Labor Day. We went to Malibu Wines overlooking the hills and mountains of Malibu. It was definitely an experience to remember, we even checked out the Biggest Loser Ranch sort of, we took a poke about. Today is my last day off before another weekend in retail madness.

Here are your highlights:

The Single Dumbest Thing Said

Chuck Todd ladies and gentlemen:

After Clint Eastwood went all Leonard Lowe on us tonight, I feel it's only more important to share this moment of stupidity.

“Democrats wish they had the diversity of speakers and deep bench [of the GOP] to show America …”

As a minority watching an entirely white panel analyze a predominantly white party it's hard not to be insulted. In this case, I find it better to laugh. It may be the dumbest thing said all year. Pat yourself on the back Chuckles.

At Home Bar - Well Bourbons & Under $30

I'm on a quest for an economically sound bar at home. My financials and my lust for high-end bourbons happens to be a constant and unwanted battle. Recently, I've taken it upon myself to taste and sample a couple of bourbons for my "well" at home as well as a single barrel or small batch under $30. I thought I'd share my some I've taken a liking to and perhaps you all will give them a try next time you're out and about.

Well, well, well:

Most people find the term well to be synonymous with "cheap", however in my terms I mean it to be "affordable, but satisfactory for an array of drinks." Wordy, I know, but so we're on the same page...I digress...In my search I've picked the brains of some of my favorite local bars and asked point blank "what's your well?" Some have surprised me others have disappointed me, nevertheless I've got my own.

Bourbon- the Wells

Ancient Age

It's cheap $8.99 for a 750ml, it hits the notes for most of your cocktails and your friends won't know the difference. Made by the mad scientists at Buffalo Trace, Ancient Age is literally Buffalo Trace the younger. It has some similar notes as Buffalo Trace, candied and caramels, but it comes in at 80 proof. It's not meant to be sipped, but with the proper hand it can satisfy most palates in a drink. Also too, the price is kind of ridick.

Henry McKenna

This is a sleeper. I doubt most people think, "Hey it's $12.99 and it's a liter, gonna be great!" I had heard about this from several customers where I work, but never gave it much thought...then I decided what the heck and I was pleased. It isn't too big, the finish doesn't linger, yet it has a memorable character. Produced by the guys at Heaven Hill, this is my definitive well at home. It makes a heckuva a cocktail, it has more sipping appeal to the novice drinker and the price is fantastic.

Single Barrel and Small Batch Bourbons:

I've had my fair share of phenomenal single barrel and small batch bourbons. I've been lucky enough to try or have sip here and there of the really really good stuff. The problem...the good stuff normally costs a bit too much. Like way too much or just out of reach. It wasn't long before I was researching and checking out which single barrel bourbons I could find at a reasonable price. Not the "best of the best", but the noteworthy and sippers that I could offer friends and company.

Under $30s - the "Try This"

Evan Williams Single Barrel

I can only tell you that we had a friend over not too long ago, she asked what I might "introduce" her to and I offered her the Evan Williams Single Barrel. This week she bought a bottle of bad-ass bourbon. Erase all you know about Evan Williams, this is a well thought out and serious single barrel. It has a nose of toffee, caramel and definite baking spices. It opens nicely and the finish isn't too acidic. I would like it to be a bit bigger, however it's clear the distillers at Heaven Hill were looking for something to be enjoyed neat. It retails at $25.99 at some places and for that price you can't go wrong with this playful bourbon.

Elijah Craig 12 Year Old

This is the classic. The bourbon I think of when I'm think of bourbon. I've turned a cult following onto this bourbon at work considering it's price point of $25.99. It's big at 94 proof, it has a touch of sweetness on the nose, but mostly it's a dry bourbon with complex layers. Elijah Craig 12 Year carries weight with strong charred notes and a lingering finish. This is something you can simply drop a bit of water into and enjoy...just remember it's 94 proof or you'll be praising it's awesomeness all night.

Wathens Single Barrel

Sipping smooth. This bourbon has balance, depth and a finish that plays just enough to remind it's there. At around $25, this bourbon is a friend to those who prefer there bourbons neat. The vanilla lingers on the nose while there is a bit of fruitiness to its body. You can definitely tell this bourbon was cared for over eight years. For those who are fans of Woodford Reserve, this is a must try.

That's what I got thus far! This list will certainly grow once I get more opportunities to enjoy some more bourbon as the year progresses. Currently, I have my eyes on the Henry McKenna Single Barrel, Buck and Elmer T. Lee. In the meantime, check these out!

Personally, I'm going to go enjoy more Wathens Single Barrel.

Get Your Dunkin Friday

I'm back! After a much needed vacation to the wonderful city that is San Fran, I'm back. Unfortunately not in one piece...okay one piece, but the night before we left I re-injured my back. The nagging injury that required six months of physical therapy last time. I spent the first night in San Fran with back spasms. No fun. We did, however, get to visit our favorites foodie spots, went to a new one and dined out at the SFFoodFest in the Mission district. I even snuck in a stop at 21st Amendment brewery. Now it's back to the grind and writing lots of writing.

Yesterday, I had a stomach bug...whole lotta no fun, then had to work late. Six days in a row can catch up to you. Today I'm taking it easy and moving at a turtle's pace. San Fran tomorrow!

We're heading to San Fran this weekend. I can't wait. If anyone has any suggestions hit me up on Twitter. I'm hoping to hit up the St. George Distillery if I have time. We've made reservations at Incanto, definitely revisiting Comstock Saloon and of course dim sum. I'm sure something historic should be on my list, but every time I go to San Fran it's about the food and drink. For some reason I think that's where the heart of the city is at...

I've spent the last week up till 2am writing and yesterday I finally got to the final draft stage. It's a relief and a prideful moment. I'm hoping all the hard work pays off. Most importantly, I'm hoping this is just the beginning. This town is funny, but I'm starting to get the hang of it...I need some sleep...won't happen since there's construction outside. Yesterday was a good day, I can't say that enough. For lunch, I met up with a new friend and it was the type of lunch where I left inspired and hopeful for the future. Then I had an audition for a play about...wait for it...a comedian, I performed the sides alright, but then I had to do a part of my stand up and it killed. It felt nice to get the jokes out and have a room full of people laughing like that. Most auditions people say hello and get in and get out. Maybe something will come out of this, who knows, but it sure was fun. The lady and I will be going to the Cubs v. Dodgers game tonight with her fellow employees. Haven't been to a game at Dodgers Stadium ever...I doubt being in the box seats will give me that full experience, shoot can't complain. Go Cubs Go!

Howdy! Last night was the CAPE mixer where I bumped into surprisingly some people I knew. It turns out the community is smaller than I thought and it was interesting just to see how many people showed up to the meet and greet. Welp, the NBC is the Olympics on. It's again pretty crappy coverage. If Bob Costas strokes his own thesaurus one more time I might puke. Jordan Wieber learned the hard truth that the world is unfair.
