I have been struggling with some personal medical issues and life stuff, and I've never been particularly skilled at "The Internet." For myself, I hope you don't archive this place, but that's just me without a Twitter account, and the decision must remain your own, especially in the wake of a new child.

Thus: Congratulations! All best wishes to you and yours for the health, grandeur, immensity, hilarity, and stunning proportion that comes with parenthood and the inscrutable power of children on their way to every day of their life. Without children of my own I have no advice for you, save that you love them visibly that they might grow to know the measure of that as a potent factor in the human experience.

Amidst all our days of madness, I hope this finds you and your loved ones well, safe, and delightfully surprised by something beautiful. Hell of a day (Monday, 30 October 2017).
...Frank,

Hell of a day (Monday, 30 October 2017).

There’s actually so much going on that I can’t yet speak to it, save to say the sense of joy that a court in DC struck down the transgender troop ban and at least some portion of Team Dumpster Fire must be feeling a measure of the anxiety that has gripped so many of us for so long. It remains to be seen, of course, what may come of all this, especially among sociopaths and kleptocrats who only had eyes for the grift.

There’s a line from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation that keeps springing to mind: “Hallelujah, holy shit, where’s the Tylenol?!”

So, on today, this day, instead of waxing too much longer, I just wanted to send a note asking how you are doing. I hope this finds you and your loved ones well. I know you have mentioned health challenges in the past, among all the other nightmares descending upon us, so I hope that on the eve of Candy Distribution Masquerade, you have some sense, at least, of wellness.

We continue.

Good night, from Chicago.

Still learning,

RobertDesert Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06086412699706383559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-26135130107468681842017-09-05T20:12:52.952-07:002017-09-05T20:12:52.952-07:00Thanks for reaching out Robert!

Wat...Sorry about your mom....and yes, cancer sucks. Watching a relative or loved one slowly go before your eyes does indeed change you forever. One should feel what they feel, weep when they have to, curse the heavens when needed, but I think the real lesson here is how hard it is when the bonds of love have been severed. And I sometimes think the real take away from these experiences is to learn more about self forgiveness, more empathy and compassion, and mostly love. Love yourself, love life, and yes---hard as it is---love others.

Mojo Rider

Mojo Riderhttp://alpha-asian.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-51584960122859796542017-07-11T10:30:56.329-07:002017-07-11T10:30:56.329-07:00Frank,
I shall now engage in the recursive act of...Frank,

I shall now engage in the recursive act of apologizing for not responding to your previous response in which you apologized for not responding earlier to my antecedent comment from the first quarter of the year. The comments are going Mandelbrot! And, anyway, it’s your blog; your response and schedule are yours to make, and I would be a poor guest if I imagined otherwise.

Thank you for your reply. Condolences on the loss of your valued friend and colleague, whose work contributed importantly to the betterment of this endeavor in our nation and on this chunk of space debris.

My delay owes to anxiety. I find myself torn between the desire to remain informed as a duty of good citizenship, and the despairing rage that rises when I actually do attend the news. I have to take frequent breaks.

I must also acknowledge that such anxiety emerges in part as an aspect of my privilege, fortunate as I have been to spend much of my life in a nation with a government—for all its shortcomings and imperfections—largely stable. Though perhaps even that fails to acknowledge the complexity of history. Maybe there is advantage in shining light on the dark corners of the apparatus, that we finally see the pathogens and vectors.

So I continue to peek at the news, like a frightened film-goer in a horror movie glancing between laced fingers at the awful, stalking thing: orange, petulant hands clutching, blind to itself, convinced that lashing out is greatness, loveless even amidst sycophants. Bad enough, and yet still worse, attended as it is by a collection of wretched goblins, unable or unwilling to be better.

May I share an anecdote? I love seeing the avatar of the late, great Bruce Lee on your Twitter feed, and it takes me back to about age 27. I got it into my head that I wanted to get into shape, but not just any shape! I wanted to get into Bruce-Lee-circa-Enter-the-Dragon shape. I mean, the man looked like he was made of steel cable. So I read Lee’s book on Jeet Kune Do. It’s interesting, by the way, if you’re unfamiliar with it. I expected it to be like many martial arts books I’d scanned over the years, largely instructional, diagrams on techniques, and very ordered, and . . . it wasn’t. It’s more like a philosophy text (which makes sense), and it doesn’t actually go into the logistics of specific techniques so much as it talks about, well, “being,” I suppose. Instead of IKEA-instructions on how to block, or throw, or kick, it contains things like his diet, and his reflections on life and experience.

It also contains details of his exercise regimen.

I laughed the first time I read through that portion, not because it was hilarious, but because I was hopeless. I still chuckle to remember it now. But reading his workouts prompted an important, two-part realization for which I’m still grateful. The first part was, “Oh, right, this was his job. He didn’t sit at a computer terminal much of the day going over Excel sheets and emails.” The second part was that—available time aside—I was never going to look like Bruce Lee, because of some basic morphological differences that owed to a long series of reproductive chance intersecting various environmental and decision-making factors.

I learned that I could still get into shape and I could work toward better health and never look like Bruce Lee. And that was o.k. I’m still working on my health to this day, and I’d wager that was the kind of thing Lee Jun-fan would have advocated more than a particular visible presentation of physical ideal.

I learned that from Bruce Lee, around 27 years after his death. Hell of a good teacher.

I hope this finds you and your loved ones well. I continue to try and check in, when I’m not panicking or furious over the state of things, over the lies and the hatred and the fear and the theft and the cruelty. Thank you again for your time, the work you do, your presence and voice, your perspective and experience, your instruction.

Still learning,

RobertDesert Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06086412699706383559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-44288763016315261722017-04-26T22:43:36.651-07:002017-04-26T22:43:36.651-07:00Robert,

Apologies for not getting back sooner as I'm terrible at checking my blog these days (promise I'll get back to it).

It means a great deal that you read my screeds on Twitter and that this particular question provoked a response. I'm too often left wondering what I can do and your list brought great perspective. I tend to overthink.

For my neighbors, it's been especially stressful and trying. They are wonderful people who are doing their best despite hate, bigotry and ignorance. My hope is that they see the good and others will see the good in them. I won't stop raging, fighting and sharing kindness when I can. Again, thank you, it means more than you know.

Best,

FrankAsian-American Pundithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15212614497445219387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-69086008305911361172017-02-27T08:34:58.602-08:002017-02-27T08:34:58.602-08:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.منصتك الاخباريةhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14896726135676172475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-29599493086917006562017-02-26T12:18:34.389-08:002017-02-26T12:18:34.389-08:00http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-compan...http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-12.html
http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-11.html
http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-25.html
http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-10.html
http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-9.html
http://www.prokr.net/2016/09/tanks-cleaning-companies-8.html
منصتك الاخباريةhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14896726135676172475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-294973891798791948.post-6667373280324779202017-02-25T10:37:57.252-08:002017-02-25T10:37:57.252-08:00Frank Chow,
Totally random stranger from the elec...Frank Chow,

Totally random stranger from the electronic maelstrom who reads your Twitter feed (though I do not have a Twitter account, hence this medium in an attempt to reach out).

Saw your recent: “Question to the hive mind. I'm trying to get a gift for my Muslim neighbor, who's had a difficult time of late. What's a good gift?”

I am not a Muslim, so if you’re looking for something specific to that religion I can’t help. That said, if you want a neighborly, “hey-just-standing-with-you-in-solidarity-in-the-horror-of-our-times” type gift I had some thoughts (with apologies if you’ve already got these covered or this is NOT the kind of thing you’re looking for):

1. Groceries (everything from essentials like toilet paper to delights like stuffed olives, keeping in mind any halal restrictions they may observe). We all need groceries, and food is life. Also userufl are things, like light bulbs, batteries, and laundry detergent. How often have we all checked a drawer and said, “Oh, come on! No bulbs? Gah!”?

2. Gift card to a hardware store. Whether re-hanging a picture of a loved one or repainting an entire room, it’s nice to know someone else helped shoulder the burden of cost.

3. Gift card to a restaurant, especially if you might know a good one that your neighbor hasn’t tried yet. This is kind of like suggestion 1, with a little bit of “get dressed up and go out and have fun on the town” thrown in.

4. A donation in their name to a good cause you know the person would support, maybe a local mosque, or poverty relief, or educational initiative, or health care provision, or similar.

5. Concert tickets! Though I recommend this one only if you have a good idea of their taste in music, obviously.

Unfortunately I’m terrible at the “oh, I just totally happened to be at the local boutique and just happened to pick up the absolutely perfect gift in your size!” type of gift. So, with people I don’t know as well as those really close to me, I default to the practical-but-essential.

Anyway, apologies for my tendency to long-winded composition. I’m out there in the world with you and your neighbor, trying to do my part to stand against the bad shit that’s going down, trying to recognize my damn privilege, trying to amplify other voices, trying to remember what it means to combine decency with compassion. Thank you for your work and your words, your time, energy, perspective, experience, and expertise.

Take care, and I hope this weekend finds you delightfully surprised by something beautiful. With greetings from Chicago.

Still learning,

RobertDesert Sonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06086412699706383559noreply@blogger.com
