Get Your Dunkin Thursday

Yesterday was hectic and all over the place, but I made it to my audition thanks to my trusty phone with GPS. I even arrived early enough to relax, focus on my sides (term for segments of script) and rock it out. All right so I didn't quite rock it out, however it did go well. Of course...it's an audition...so you never know. In other news the Trans-Atlantic Throwdown is now available on ITunes ! We are worthy of the ITunes overlords. Thanks for those who have thus far taken time out to listen again you can email us at tatpocast@gmail.com . This weekend the lady and me are heading to San Fran. Lil Sis Frank is running the marathon and we will be there to cheer her on (special thanks to my lady for booking this lovely trip months in advance w/o which this amazing occasion wouldn't be possible.) Election day is around the corner, don't forget you can vote early ! Here are your highlights: Chamber of Commerce's foreign money isn't funny Ummm...how's this for ba...

Get Your Dunkin Thursday

I am becoming less numb than earlier in the week, that's a positive. Last night was another successful Laughing Liberally as we celebrated ring leader Matt Filipowicz's birthday . The special guest was Anne Elizabeth Moore an author, activists and pretty much overall bad ass, as comedian Adam Burke put it (paraphrasing) "makes us feel completely worthless for being apathetic." Her work is phenomenal as she is continuing on the path of Studs Terkel as well assisting women in Cambodia to become empowered. It was really fantastic stuff. (I hate using "really" but my brain is still a bit mushy). We also enjoyed the musical prowess of a spectacular emcee D-Nick the Microphone Misfit . Two thumbs up! Lastly and most importantly, the Heartland Cafe and No Exit Cafe are having financial troubles. If you could spare a dime to these two gems of our great city please do. It is just another sign that things aren't quite over yet. DONATE! SAVE THE HEARTLAND!! Here...

Felix Salmon: It’s never good when employment falls during what’s meant to be an economic recovery. It’s worth remembering that, if people start getting excited about today’s drop of 125,000 in the total-employment number. Yes, private-sector hiring was marginally positive, by 83,000, but we’d all like to see much bigger numbers than that. Unemployment dropped sharply, to 9.5%. But why? It doesn’t seem to be thanks to people getting jobs: after all, employment fell. And the labor force participation rate — the number of employed people divided by the total number of people capable of working — hit another new low today, of 64.7%. If people are just giving up and removing themselves from the workforce, then a falling unemployment rate only serves to hide the bad news. What’s more, the only important statistical decline in the unemployment rate was among white women, who already have lower unemployment than just about anybody else. The rest of the country — including, crucially, men over...

Reality Check: Get the Jobs Bill Passed Yesterday

Washington Independent : As Congress weighs its plans for tackling the nation’s enduring jobs crisis, the National Employment Law Project today laid out the stakes of inaction: Nearly 1.2 million Americans would lose their unemployment benefits next month unless Congress steps in to extend the filing deadline. By July, that number jumps to almost 5 million. Under current law, unemployed folks have access to 26 weeks of state-sponsored insurance benefits before four separate tiers of emergency federal benefits kicks in. Confusing the arrangement, recipients must exhaust their current benefits before filing for the next tier. Trouble is, the filing deadline for all tiers is at the end of February. The result? Roughly 380,000 workers currently receiving state benefits will miss the chance to apply for federal help, NELP estimates, while another 814,000 currently getting federal help wouldn’t be able to enter the next tier. “Congress must swiftly act to maintain the lifeline for millions o...
