MLK Day Attempted Bomber Charged

Spokane:

A man has been charged in the case of a bomb that had been placed at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade in Spokane in January.

A magistrate clerk at the U.S. District Court in Spokane tells The Associated Press that Kevin William Harpham, who was arrested Wednesday, is scheduled to make an initial appearance Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time.

Harpham has been charged with one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and one count of knowingly possessing an improvised explosive device.

Meanwhile, federal and local law enforcement officers descended on a home near Addy, a town in rural Stevens County. Two T-shirts found with the bomb were tied to that area.

The bomb was found on Jan. 17 inside a backpack by workers before the start of the parade. The bomb was defused without incident.
