See the thing is, in the long run the GOP benefits from shutting down the government. A shut down government can do nothing and thus the nation will further condemn government as an ineffective waste of money. They'll further stop caring and the clowns in the GOP will take over by default.
Of course maybe if Democrats actually got out there and pointed this out routinely that might be different. Oh well, that seems unlikely.
