Best of 2011: Sbtrkt - Never, Never

I was introduced to this band by an acting buddy. The entire album has this kind of infectious groove. And with various vocal appearances by some of the most talented performers, you get one of my favorite albums of the year. I could've picked a couple of different tracks from this album and undoubtedly you would have liked all of them, but this so happens to be my fave. Enjoy!

Best of 2011: Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

And it begins! With, predictably, music and the best songs of 2011. So the first in this installment is Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues. This song hits on all the ethereal notes of phenomenal folk music. Fleet Foxes released such a strong album and this so happens to be the defining song as well as the album's namesake, Helplessness Blues. There's a reason it was nominated for a Grammy, it is simply that good.

Lyrically the song levels me with its honesty and sincerity:

I was raised up believing I was somehow unique
Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see
And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be
A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me

But I don't, I don't know what that will be
I'll get back to you someday soon you will see

I don't know about you, but basically that's how I've felt all of 2011.

Holydays

Well I'm back in sunny California. The trip to Chicago although brief was fantastic in that I got to see my family. There's nothing quite like an Oak Park Christmas Eve. It was cold, but not unbearable. I received some lovely unexpected gifts and played a mean board game or two. Lots of screaming, drinking and laughs. That's my family.

We also trekked to my ladies neck of the woods for a farmer's Christmas. There's something relaxing and peaceful about being surrounded by nothing i.e. the picture above. Her nieces and nephews were adorable as can be, watching them reminds me of what Christmas used to feel like each year. And it snowed the last day.

The only downfall was I didn't sleep much. With all the travel and my retail work schedule I think I only had one decent night of sleep...somehow though it makes sense. Christmas and the holidays have always seemed so rushed and full of anxiety these past couple of years. I guess I should expect it more so now that I live across the states.

As for the blog, I'm going to spend the rest of year posting "a few of my favorite things" from 2011. So no Dunkin for the rest of the year and probably some sporadic posts here and there, but definitely some rockin tunes, links to posts, quotes and some funny videos. I hope you all had a blessed and an amazing holiday.

One more day till Christmas Eve! I'm not that excited because I'll be working at 6am, then hopping on a flight (thank God it's Virgin) and arriving late to the party in Oak Park. At least I'll be able to see family for like two hours. What's everyone up to this holiday? How's the Festival of Lights going? I hope everyone is having a blessed and fantastic time with family and friends.

From the Mix Tape - The Seven Mile Journey

(from the previous release "The Journey Studies")

From the label:

The Seven Mile Journey is a quartet from the northern parts of Denmark that operates within the wide ranges of the post-rock genre. The band settled on its current name back in 1999 and released a demo cd in 2001 followed by the debut album “The Journey Studies” in 2006, and their second album “The Metamorphosis Project” in 2008.

The music of The Seven Mile Journey has always been signified by instrumental storytelling that through captivating soundscapes, dynamic changes and long intense passages invites the listener into absorption, which is also the core on the bands 3rd album “Notes for the Synthesis”.

Everything about this band, everything they play I'm immediately drawn to; it's raw, emotional and the musicianship is incredible. The Seven Mile Journey. The band name. Is Perfect. Each song, carefully crafted taking you on a symphonic ride that is in itself a journey. I know I sound a bit fan boyish, but it isn't often I can sit down and be moved by a band every listen. Perhaps it's my mood this time of year, I'm always in this mindset to discover a "winter soundtrack", the Seven Mile Journey so happens to be my 2011 "winter soundtrack."

Visit their site here. Their label site allows you to preview their latest release "Notes for the Synthesis." Enjoy!

Mitt Romney Channels the KKK

Steve Benen and Steve M over at No More Mister Nice Blog both seem surprised at Mitt Romney's newest low. Romney is using the phrase "Keep America American" a throwback right out of the infamous Ku Klux Klan's playbook.

Steve M. asks:

Really, Mitt? You really want to use this phrase?

I would say YES really. It is the exact kind of phrase that rings with the base. Why? Because that's who Romney needs to convince to ride with him through the primaries. And Romney and Romney's people know very well that's what they're doing here.

They want to paint Obama and his policies as wholly Un-American, it's something the Right has been trying to do since the '08 election. It's the base that foams at the mouth for FOX Nation headlines (update: Steve M. also saw the same FOX Nation headline), cheers with Rush when he calls Obama the "most-racial" president, and doesn't flinch when Billy Cunningham calls Obama a "boy". Romney needs that base to win and right now he ain't winning.

My question to both Steve's is, why are you surprised? At this point it should be expected. Mitt Romney has shown time and time again he has no qualms with flipping and flopping. Why would anyone think Mitt Romney wouldn't go this low? It's a phrase that is on the tips of every raging wing-nut's tongue, on message boards and in the underpinnings of right-wing talk radio.

This is the new conservative America. Same as the old. Romney wants the base to know he's more American than the socialist, Muslim, terrorist-sympathizing, Barack Hussein Obama and that he's man enough to say it in no uncertain terms.

From the Mix Tape - Benton Falls

I've been writing a lot late at night. It seems to be the best time for me creatively. Throughout the process I search for music that inspires or centers my mind. Songs that bring me back to certain places mentally, so I can channel the mood or feeling that I want specific characters to convey. I know it all sounds ridiculous. I agree, don't get me wrong, but it's what I have to do for whatever reason to put my ideas to puter.

Through my search I stumbled upon an album that I had forgotten A) How rockin it was and B) How it helped me grieve and grow. Benton Falls was there for me. Emo. Yes, but I don't care. At the moment in my life when this album was released I was regressing. Unsure of myself, I felt it best to drink, conform and try to escape the tragedy of years past. And so when I first had the opportunity to listen to this album in its entirety I was blown the eff away.

It was raw. It was emotional. It was melodic. It was where I was. And tonight I jammed out to it with the reminder of how far I've come.

2001 was a long damn time ago.

Can you name an album that's done the same for you?

People who are suffering. People are trying to make ends meet. People who work two or three jobs. People who vote for Obama NOT because he leans Keynesian is his economic policy, but because in the short arm of life, he's the best bet for people having a fair shake. This weekend, despite working everyday, was great. The lady and I celebrated three years and six months of our relationship. We decided on a whim to go to the restaurant in the movie "I Love You Man" James' Beach. It was a quirky place with great fish tacos and nice cocktails, exactly what we both wanted. In our first six months in California my lady has been more than amazing, I cannot tell you how grateful I am...enough of the mushy stuff. Today or tomorrow I get my stitches out, I helluva nervous. Get Your Dunkin Wednesday - Thumb Edition

So yesterday was my day off. My time to prep for Thanksgiving and get a ton of stuff done and I did. I got my shopping out of the way. Purchased flowers to brighten up the place for my lady. Then came dinner prep...I was rockin out carrots, celery, then came the potatoes...I don't own a mandoline, but I wanted the circular look for my potatoes. I've done this before with some great success. And after about 15 or so I was halfway done, then a potato got away and I sliced my thumb instead. Bad. Real bad. I'll spare you the details, but I had to use about four paper towels and tape, so that I could call my lady to help me out. When she arrived she helped me re-wrap the wound, then we had to decide, to go to the hospital or to not go to the hospital?

Since moving to California, I've been without health insurance. Neither one of my employers provides health insurance for the amount of hours I work, roughly 24 hrs per job. I don't make enough currently to afford coverage, however we assessed the wound and the impending bills and decided I should go to the hospital. We went to UCLA and it was fantastic. Everyone was amazing, helpful and calming. I did slice part of my nail and most of the tip of my thumb, so I required about four to six stitches (good thing I went). I explained I didn't have health insurance at the end and the nurse helped greatly, describing how to set up a payment plan in a couple of weeks. Oh, and that if I didn't keep up with payments that it would hurt my credit score...how lovely.

I cannot express to you the initial shock of seeing what I had done to myself. I was then pissed because I've been trained in the kitchen and should know better, but this stuff happens. And that's the worst part, it was an accident. I shouldn't have to worry about going to the hospital because I don't have insurance. I shouldn't have to face the possibility of mountains of debt because I made a mistake thousands will make this Thanksgiving. No one should.

When Congress debated the Affordable Health Care Act part of me knew it wouldn't go far enough. Now, being in my current predicament, almost one less thumb, I see that even clearer. Single-payer isn't just the best way for our country, it's the humane way. As Americans we shouldn't accept anything less. Many people, almost 14 million, might not be as lucky as to simply slice their thumb.

I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

P.S. It's amazing how useless you become without the use of the thumb on your dominant hand.

Get Your Dunkin Monday

Well I got a call late Friday night and now I'm in a play that goes up next weekend! Crazy. I had my first rehearsal on Saturday, today we start tech week and umm I have four days to learn my lines. Luckily I'm not a lead, but a supporting role. It's an exciting task, but I'll be away from this thing some more. Gotta do what I gotta do. For anyone in LA who would like to attend the play, simply email me and I'll let you know the details. Rock on!

I need time to write. I'm almost done with my first draft of another pilot and need time to sit down and focus for a couple of hours....maybe next week? So far the move to Santa Monica has been most helpful in my writing. I wrote only short skit scripts and stand-up, maybe a song or two. Being here I've written a comedic pilot, almost done with a sci-fi one and have an outline for a movie. Call me inspired, I don't know, but even with two jobs this has been my earliest take away. Hopefully next week I'll get more time to finish one script and start another!

Here are your highlights:

The long-term unemployed, Chart of the Day

Pat Buchanan still has a job

Economic signs are up and down

That Obama always campaigning and reigning down teh truth

Occupy Wall St., the 99% are right and last night Occupy Oakland escalated with flashbangs and more tear gas. It's almost as if authorities are coaxing protesters to become violent or baiting them to retaliate....don't.

This week sucks. Working a double today = no fun. I've got a lot going on, but none in the things I'd like to be doing. Such is life. In other news, the Redskins look like they are in disarray and umm the economy is not getting any better because well the GOP needs to make sure we have "In God We Trust" as our motto. IMPORTANT! PRESSING MATTERS!

Here are your highlights:

Occupy Oakland begins its general strike

I keep hearing this, Your Fault, while somethings might be, when the economy tanked a lot of us were taken off guard and those we had made deals with couldn't come through. You don't plan for all things to go wrong. Did the banks?

Harry Reid says the GOP are puppets to Grover

Chinglish - I have a friend who is a member of the cast, so I'll refrain from critiquing, however BigWOWO has some issues with the plot

For a Day like Today

It was a shitty day. One that I would like a do-over on. I just got in a funk that I couldn't possibly get out of...in any comprehensible way. I'm piled up against too much debt with not enough income. And complaining about it makes me feel selfish considering how many other people are struggling much worse. This is the reality for a lot of people right now not just me. It pisses me off when I get down, but humanly I do.

I am, however, blessed with an amazing woman who despite my faults, short-falls and baggage, loves me. I am grateful beyond words. I wrote over a year ago about My Chinese Proverb, it seems I'm still paying down with interest. At times that becomes too much, but I wouldn't be me, if I didn't find a path to bounce back. In due time...

Till then I listen to Bon Iver.

It's was a great weekend with the family. We got dim sum on Saturday, pre-gamed at my sister's place for the USC/Stanford game, watched the game WHAT A GAME and then yesterday got together in our hood to watch the Skins stink. But all was okay considering I was with family. I miss them already. This week is pretty darn busy and I think I'm going to start looking for different work. Why? I want to make more working less hours, that's why. Last day of the Fall Fund Drive. Thanks to all who've helped along the way!

Here are your highlights:

How Republicans hate (D)emocracy

Occupy Wall St. changing the conversation

Sad but true, Asian-Americans most bullied ethnic group in schools

Wallpapers for your desktop

Michelle Obama the "angry black woman" is the new meme on the Right. It's getting desperate, could it be the GOP is starting to panic about 2012 already?!

The family is in town. Looking forward to seeing them. Yesterday was a great learning experience as I got to sit in on a casting for a film. It was cool to see the other side, hear a director's point of view and see how other actors audition. I think my next audition will be much improved. I just have to keep working. Maintain focus and good things will happen...right?

Here are your highlights:

BIG OLE PUMPKINS!

Fox non-news

Michele Bachmann getting asked by her own "party" to bow out of the race

Maybe there won't be a double dip after all

I'm beat, but I'm not down! Why? Well after a bad day on the truck (slow) and an awkward audition where they wanted a Chinese (Mandarin speaking, I don't speak Mandarin) scientist, I realized it's all part of the game. That's just how it goes out here. So to take more initiative I'm getting my learn on. I'll be studying more, hitting the library and doing some observing to improve my own acting skillz. And and and hopefully then I won't be sent on auditions that make absolutely no sense more me. I hope. My Dad and older brother get in town in a couple of days, it's gonna be RAGE-tastic.

Here are your highlights:

Goldman Sachs board member indicted for insider trading

It was a roller coaster of a weekend. I feel pretty exhausted, but yesterday was nice and offered some much needed hope despite the Redskin's loss. I'm working doubles the beginning of the week and then my family comes into town. We're going to watch USC play Stanford, eat Chinese food and enjoy some booze. Looking forward to it. I need a stay-cation.

Quick hit analysis of yesterday's Redskins game. Beck played a solid game, the defense was the surprising let down. And yes I think Cam Newton is legit.

(everything that is wrong w/the media "is it appropriate?" never mind the seriousness of the issue at hand)

So I worked the double yesterday. Gots to eat. I spent late last night writing. Penning my latest script idea. I'm in the last swing of things. Hopefully I'll get the first draft done by this weekend...not likely, but that's the deadline I'm setting for myself. I swear if I ever did get a writing gig, I would miss every single deadline. I've been trying to train, get better at it, any ideas on how to train for deadlines? Hope all is rockin, ya'll!

2010 sucked. Obstruction. Sociopaths. The sabotaging of our country in order to defeat Obama has left our country jobless and with empty pockets. That's why people have been Occupying. That's why people rage. We can't even tax people who make millions, when far too many don't make $30,000 a year. The American Dream ladies and gentlemen. "Fewer Jobs, Less Pay"

I'm a bit fatigued, not gonna lie. I finally had a day off on Monday and spent most of it cleaning the apartment. Yesterday I worked a double, today I was supposed to work another double...luckily I don't have to and am only working tonight. Apologies for missing yesterday's Dunkin, I was rushing about and just ran out of time to read anything. Today I'm here ready to RAGE. There's a lot of stupid out there, be safe, read facts, ignore nonsense and most of all continue being awesome. My Pops & older bro are coming to visit next week. Looking forward to it!
