Cut the Bush Tax Cuts

What Booman says : Maybe I am a poor judge of the mood of the electorate, but it seems to me that people are pissed off right now. And I don't think they are pissed off that those people living on Staten Island who make more than a quarter million dollars a year in gross income are paying too much in taxes. I don't think people are looking to the government to extend the tax cuts that the well-to-do received under President Bush. I know that the populist mood of the country is a bit inchoate and not necessarily logically consistent, but a common theme of anger is that we're running deficits that are too big. Since no one wants to pay for our government, it seems only natural that most people would support making people who make over $250,000 a year pay for it. Yet, once again, we have a bunch of Democrats who don't want to change the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. They say it will be a tough sell. Maybe it will be, I don't know. However, I think most pe...

Get Your Dunkin Thursday

Ok so yesterday my computer got the swine flu or the ebola or some kind of virus and poof, I was out of commission. Couldn't post a damn thing. Stupid PC's. So that is why you didn't get any rage filled posts yesterday or any heads slamming on desks. Last night was great. Drinking Liberally was moved to Wednesday so everyone could watch the SOTU together. It also ended up being one of the "Watch parties" for OFA, so needless to say two rooms were packed and rowdy. I for one enjoyed the speech. It is hard not to like a speech by Obama, however this particular speech was more straight talk . I spoke with another anonymous blogger who agreed that speech last night was not for the policy wonks or pol heads like ourselves, but for those who have been missing it or those being misinformed. And if you ever doubted, HE IS THE PRESIDENT. The humor was great, the stabs were playful, the focus on jobs was paramount, and the talk of bipartisanship was fantasy. Overall I thi...

Get Your Dunkin Wednesday

Yesterday while killing some time before Drinking Liberally I decided to walk in a quirky poster shop off Belmont. I was looking for nothing, but then I stumbled upon American Born Chinese , a graphic novel by Gene Yang. Now I had heard about this book last year sometime, for some reason I had never picked it up, but it was sitting there staring at me so I had to get it. Boy am I glad I did. American Born Chinese encapsulates the Asian-American ( as well as the American immigrant) story with simplicity, humor and intelligence. I am a fanboy of the graphic novel genre and so my expectations were rather high, ABC exceeded them quite surprisingly. I don't think I have ever read something that gets at what it is like growing up Chinese (or Asian for that matter) in America so cleanly. Yang with his illustrations and humor has given me a story to read to my kids (when I decide to have kids) and I am forever grateful for that. Instant classic. (for good measure more parenthesis) Here a...
