The Government Can

Do something . There is still time to rethink the whole "no one wants a second stimulus because of confidence." Maybe if we talk louder somebody in the administration will notice? I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy I said my piece last night about the Shirley Sherrod story . The culprit in this is Andrew Breitbart, a sociopath who wants nothing but to divide this nation. The administration, however and the White House's handling of the situation has been disappointing . I was watching the Today Show this morning and instead of focusing on the dark deception of false equivalencies drummed up by the right wing noise machine they focused on the administration's mistake. Exactly what I feared. Hopefully this will pass as we have much more pressing issues, but damn if this wasn't avoidable . I want to say more about my own experiences. I want to tell you how I empathize with Sherrod. I want to give you examples, but that would play into identity politics that I know happens too often. The real shame of this is it is clear we can't talk about race like grown ups . Not in Uhmerika. I have a busy and hectic day up...

Better than Offshore Drilling

Image
LA Times : "After careful consideration of all the concerns expressed during the lengthy review and consultation process and thorough analyses of the many factors involved, I find that the public benefits weigh in favor of approving" the project, Salazar said Wednesday in Boston. "With this decision we are beginning a new direction in our nation's energy future, ushering in America's first offshore wind energy facility and opening a new chapter in the history of this region." The Boston Globe was the first to report the administration's decision Wednesday online. Federal approval will put Cape Wind in line to become the first U.S. offshore wind farm -- assuming it clears a flurry of lawsuits expected to follow the decision -- and set the stage for similar projects along the East Coast, the Great Lakes and Gulf of Mexico. These things take time, in this case nine years , but this is a better direction, then say this... I am Frank Chow and I approved this ...

Man am all kinds of backwards today. Woke up disoriented. Looked outside and it is snowing, not as much a predicted. I called into the "work weather hotline" only to hear I just HAD to come in. Pffft. Of course up north of the main office it is snowing quite a bit more, the schools are closed and the roads aren't nearly as clear. Plus the CTA was packed, WTF (you know I managed a seat cuz that's how I roll). Tonight is Drinking Liberally and rumor has it will be graced by founding father. Rock on. Lots of bbq to eat. Lots of beer to drink. 7pm tonight at Sheffield's . Be there or be Glenn Beck! Here are your highlights: Scott Lee Cohen steps down from the Lt. Governor race in IL, and the replacements are flooding in for a piece JUICY! Tea Partiers vs. Ron Paul. Proof yet again the Tea Partiers are xenophobic, homophobic, paranoid racists under the guise of fiscal conservatism and American catch phrases Lil Wayne getting sentenced Cooool, 165 million old spide...

Who Dat?!! SAINTS!!! What a great game! Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints and the people of the city of New Orleans. Five years after Katrina the city has persevered and have a nice little nugget of happiness...FINALLY! It was an exciting game that the lady and I were lucky enough to enjoy with some old friends. The commercials were meh, but the game more than made up for it. Lots of surprises, hard nose football and some puuurtty plays. I must say I felt that if Peyton Manning had the ball with minutes on the clock and the Colts were behind; Manning would find a way to win. I would have not expected a pickle by Manning (a pretty one at that) to close the deal for a Saint win. And that my friends is why football is the greatest game ever played. All right so let's do this because a lot of controversies are around the corner. Here are your highlights: Obama plans bipartisan health care summit .....trying....my....patience.... Another "Struggles of the Rich" story ...

Movement on DADT

It seems that Obama was serious when he stated in his SOTU that he would repeal "Don't Ask Don't Tell." Today top defense officials called for an end to the despicable policy implemented 16 years ago. Sullivan has a wrap up of their statements: Gates' statement had all the usual Gates touches: a commitment to objective, calm, and professional review. And it has a plea to outsiders not to overly politicize this by using soldiers and their families as pawns in the debate. The bottom line is a 45 day review to make sure that the current policy is being applied fairly and a year-long review to examine every aspect of this proposed change. But Mullen's statement was a stunner. He did more than endorse this long process of inquiry and debate and to ensure that the current policy is implemented more fairly - so that anyone with a grievance against a gay servicemember can out him or her and end his or her career. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stated befo...

Pelosi Hates Our Troops

Or so that will be the headline soon enough...speaking about the "spending freeze" proposed by Obama and his administration Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated the Pentagon should be included as well. Huff Post : "While we all want to support our men and women in uniform... and our national defense and our veterans, I don't think that we should protect military contractors, and I want to make that distinction very clear," Pelosi said at her weekly press conference Thursday. The government can't minimize wasteful spending without auditing the Pentagon, Pelosi said, citing a 2009 report indicating that top U.S. weapons programs went over budget by some $296 billion. "I don't support exempting them from the freeze," she said. "So I think there has to be a bifurcation in terms of: we support our military and their families and we want them to have everything they need, but we do not support an entitlement program for overruns on the part ...

We Just Don't Learn

Atrios : Giving Up Chuck Toddler informs us that Obama , in SOTU, will push for 3 year non-defense discretionary spending freeze. And then, I suppose, he'll "focus" on jobs. Message: Obama cares. We are ruled by idiots. Obama and his administration has pretty much had all their outlooks wrong this past year; stimulus was too small, unemployment is still at 10% and the real estate market ain't looking too good . Bang up job Timmeh and Larreh. Not surprised, obviously the move to the deficit spending while still blowing shit up is to appease our center right nation, who by the way knows absolutely nothing whatsoever . But I get the politics... FDR fell for this trap his second year as well and it led to a REAL "double dip" the so called deficit hawks pee their pants over. The question is if on Wednesday during the SOTU this "spending freeze" is a political game to make the bedwetters happy or really as idiotic as it sounds. MSNBC : Among the preside...

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy Well the world as we know it is upside down. The Democratic Party is over. Tea Baggers can win elections forever. Get ready for Republican rule for the rest of our lives. Obama is the Black Jimmy Carter. If you turn on the teevee or read the headlines, that is pretty much what the news outlets are saying. Wow. Our liberal media bias at work. Now, I am not going to downplay the significance of the win in Massachusetts , however if anything this should be a lesson to Democrats , if you play it lazy, if you don't get it done the people will forget how bad the other party is and vote against you. It is sad that the seat formally held by Ted Kennedy was won by such an asshat , but what we are going to hear for the next couple of weeks maybe months is exactly what I wrote above. It is not time to panic, but it is time to put a concerted focused effort so this doesn't happen throughout 2010. It is amazing how...

If The Bankers Hate It, It Must be Good

There have been rumors going about that the Obama administration is looking to recoup TARP funds from the banks through taxes. This seems a reasonable proposal to most Americans, but the banking lobby is all pouty faced. Pat Garofalo of Wonk Room : Of course, the banking lobby is up in arms: Edward Yingling, president and chief executive, American Bankers Association: “To impose yet another burden on the industry would obviously decrease their ability to lend.” Scott Talbott, head of government affairs, Financial Services Roundtable: “Placing additional taxes on top of the new regulatory burdens will stifle the industry just as the economy is beginning to recover.“ Yingling also referred to the proposal as “perplexing,” while another banker called it an “absurd idea.” The main argument coming from the banks is that they either already have or are in the process of paying back TARP, and that any losses are going to come from either the automakers or AIG. Garofalo also points out that th...

How to Deal with Darth Cheney and the Village

Let me translate Gibbs actual response: You morons, Cheney was part of 8 years of piles and piles of poop . I mean like a ton of poop. So much poop were trying to shift through it. Why are you listening to Darth Cheney? The guy ignored requests, TORTURED, they STARTED A FAKE WAR IN IRAQ REMEMBER THAT? EVER HEARD OF THAT? and violated most Executive Branch powers. You stupid piles of Village excrement...WHAT THE EFF IS WRONG WITH YOU?!! Cheney is only free and not behind bars dropping the soap to get all Rush Limbaughed for one reason, our Administration went soft on the guy and we believe in due process. So now let me get on to talking about the 800 other piles of poop we have to clean up in the West Wing, like the banking industry. Yes, you douche nugget from Faux News? Randolph & Mortimer meet the IMF

I keep having all these video moments. Every time I read something I think of a commercial or movie. This made me think of the Duke Brothers, Randolph and Mortimer a la " Trading Places ." I am rather tired and the rage has subsided in me for one day.... RAAAGGEEEE Just kidding, how stupid is this IMF sneak job by the administration? Digby : This story is being ignored because I assume the mainstream media believes the administration will ultimately get its way and pass the supplemental with the IMF money attached. But it's just possible that it won't. And the Democrats who stand in the way will be doing the party a great favor politically. These continued giveaways to wealthy, elite institutions are political poison, which is why the Republicans are positioning themselves (completely disingenuously) on the other side of the big money boyz. It is amazing how much money we funnel into PEW PEW and the Monopoly guy. Timmeh just kind of asks for more and we hand it over ...

Obama on National Security Cheney on 9/11

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News , World News , and News about the Economy Both sides may be sincere in their views, but neither side is right. The American people are not absolutist, and they don’t elect us to impose a rigid ideology on our problems. They know that we need not sacrifice our security for our values, nor sacrifice our values for our security, so long as we approach difficult questions with honesty, and care, and a dose of common sense. That, after all, is the unique genius of America. That is the challenge laid down by our Constitution. That has been the source of our strength through the ages. That is what makes the United States of America different as a nation. It was a historic speech and in contrast we had Dick Cheney . 9/11 was mentioned at least 25 times and he admitted to breaking the rule of law. It is a fact that only detainees of the highest intelligence value were ever subjected to enhanced interrogation. You've heard endlessly about waterboarding. It h...

Netroots Nation from the Shadows

Image
I must preface this by saying I was in costume, hidden in the shadows and completely undetected, so for those of you worried about my ninja guise being unmasked fear not...thank American Apparel. This past Saturday I had the opportunity to attend the Netroots Nation Salon in Chicago. The salon actually took place north of Chicago in the Rogers Park neighborhood joint, the No Exit Café . Along the walls Che Guevara posters and photos hung crookedly. The place reminded me of a lost era where worn wooden floors were a sign of customer traffic not deterioration. I entered as the panelists took to the stage with host Matt Filipowicz welcoming each one WWE announcer style. It was a rowdy start. The crowd was for the most part over 30 and white which was discouraging, however what I expected. Considering the locale of the venue and normal café-goers I did have a smidge of hope it would be a diverse crowd. *Sigh* We did fill the place to the brim, but that should be the case every time. The p...
