Get Your Dunkin Tuesday

I missed a day! Holy moly I missed a day of INSANITY!!! My normal routine this past month or so has been wake up early, eat, go to work, come back from work and do my workout. Last night threw a wrench in that process, I had to pick up my Redskins tickets from the far reaches of Madison Avenue! No really. Hillsdale, IL where back behind a windy road, hidden amongst trees and next door neighbor to the Shire is a Fed Ex location . Fugging awful. I didn't get back till 9:30pm at which point it was lights out Frank. So I missed a workout which means I HAVE MY SKINS TIX, but I am behind a day...the plan...I am going to do the unthinkable and skip the recovery day or add it as a night workout. Yes I am that INSANE one day two workouts!! We will see, but the great part is although I feel less accomplishment having not worked out two days in a row. I FEEL less accomplishment having NOT worked out TWO days in a row. I am already a changed man and that was the whole point of this journey. Ha...

History Be Not Ignored

Bonddad provides an interesting correlation between the last three recoveries in the U.S. : 1.) From a GDP growth rate perspective, this recovery has printed stronger than the last two recoveries at the same point in the recovery. 2.) Post-recovery employment has been a big problem for the last three recoveries. Then the question is, why when attempting to recoup the economy, do the powers that be consistently refuse to address the struggling unemployment rate? I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

In a State of Ugh

Paul Krugman states there is a "Reason for Despair": It’s depressing: shibboleths and conventional wisdom are blocking all routes out of this slump. And I worry that policy makers will just sit there, for years and years, all the while congratulating themselves on the soundness of their policies. There really hasn't been a "recovery" as the papers, tv talking heads, Congress and the administration touts. They all however, are simply satisfied to pat themselves on the back because the rich are back to shopping. Wall St., although having its ups and downs, is not in complete disarray. And the ruling elite don't have to worry about their stock portfolios anymore. So job well done. Move along. The unemployed will eventually be dealt with by the Free Market Fairy. She works in such mysterious ways... I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Up

Freedom Markets! This is not good at all. The current level of 471,000 (and 4-week average of 453,500) is still high, and suggests ongoing weakness in the labor market. More at Calculated Risk Wonder when someone will notice and find this unsettling? I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

Consquences

For coddling fat cats, Steve Benen : Last month, it was House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) embarrassing himself . This month, it's his Senate counterparts . As a financial reform bill starts to take shape in Washington, two key lawmakers came to New York City last week to explain what it means for Wall Street, and how financial executives might help prevent some of its least market-friendly aspects from becoming law by electing more Republicans, FOX Business Network has learned. About 25 Wall Street executives, many of them hedge fund managers, sat down for a private meeting Thursday afternoon with two of the most powerful Republican lawmakers in Congress: Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and John Cornyn, the senior senator from Texas who runs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, one of the primary fundraising arms of the Republican Party. It appears to have been rather shameless -- Democrats, the GOP leaders said, are going to try to punish...

The Lost Decade of Bush

WaPo - The past decade was the worst for the U.S. economy in modern times, a sharp reversal from a long period of prosperity that is leading economists and policymakers to fundamentally rethink the underpinnings of the nation's growth. It was, according to a wide range of data, a lost decade for American workers. The decade began in a moment of triumphalism -- there was a current of thought among economists in 1999 that recessions were a thing of the past. By the end, there were two, bookends to a debt-driven expansion that was neither robust nor sustainable. I hope Sadam's gun keeps Bushie warm at night. Bad Advice

Krugman poses a troubling and puzzling incite about the White House and its advisers. All the while he stumbles on a key point even he misses : Interesting back and forth between Brad DeLong and Noam Scheiber over the question of whether Democrats, possibly including the White House, really believed last summer that “[t]he stimulus was working more or less on schedule, and the job market was gradually recovering.” I guess it must have been true. But all I can say is, what were they thinking? There was ample warning, even before the severity of the crisis was clear, that the recession was likely to be followed by a prolonged jobless recovery. E.g., here (January 2008): I still keep reading articles asserting that the last two recessions were brief and shallow. Formally, that’s true. But … in both cases the employment slump went on for a long time after the recession was supposedly over. There’s every reason to think that the same thing will happen this time. There’s a huge overhang of e...

Sorry for the late posting action, I decided to take today off for some much needed R & R. If you have the days off people, you gots to take them. Today marks one year and six months since the lady and I started dating. Pretty much amazing. She is the rock in my life and I couldn't be more grateful. She was one of the few to encourage me to find this outlet and start writing again. So yeah that's my mush for the day. How is the world? What's new? Who is raging and who deserves to be raged on? (that sounded dirty). Ladies and gents big news coming up soon I suggest you stay tuned. Here are your highlights: Do Obama officials know what his Afghanistan plan is? Nerds crying everywhere, World Of Warcraft has been beaten Not surprised here, but Palin is a birther We've hit bottom Calling the GOP's bluff , with all the hoopla surrounding the health care debate, it has become mo...

Teh More Crazy Economy

I hope this isn't a growing trend, but Josh Marshall points out more of the crazy. Perhaps it is the Faux News Reality , but as polls are showing teh America is teh stupid : A few minutes ago I left the office to grab a cup of coffee. And on the way out the door I spent a few moments in the Fox News alternative universe. The topic was budget deficits and the stimulus plan; and the anchor was Stuart Varney, a one-time financial news reporter for CNN. Varney was berating some hapless guest about how the Stimulus had "failed" because the jobless rate is higher now than it was when the bill passed. And thus the money should never even have been spent. Now, we're no strangers to hearing that the stimulus 'failed'. But that's usually from Republican politicians. And from them it's more understandable. First, because an opposition party has no percentage doing anything but saying the in-party's policies have failed. And even though no one thought that une...
