Thoughts and Prayers out to Andre Berto and his family

ESPN has some sad news. Welterweight champion Andre Berto, who I posted about earlier , has dropped out of his scheduled fight with Shane Mosley due to overwhelming family tragedy in Haiti . "Since the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday evening, I have been focusing on my family and the Haitian people who are facing an inconceivable battle for survival while still trying to continue to prepare for an opportunity I have dreamt of since childhood," Berto said in a statement. "I lost several family members to the earthquake and, after two days without word, was relieved to learn that my sister, Naomi, and her daughter, Jessica, survived, but were left homeless. I have seen the pain in my parents' eyes as they attempt to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home. "As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted and, therefore, I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on January 30." B...

The earthquake that struck Haiti has left complete devastation . The early reports have not been promising and country that just seemed to be turning is now in disarray. Many organizations have avenues for you to donate and help out the relief efforts including former President Bill Clinton's Foundation . Even the slightest amount offers doctors and those on the ground much needed assistance. World Champion Berto Concerned for Haiti

Welterweight Champ Andre Berto, a Haitian- American is set to fight Shane Moseley on Jan. 30th . It is supposed to be the biggest fight of his career. I have long followed his rise as prospect and his recent ascendancy to the title, maybe have seen him fight six or seven times. He is exciting, explosive and for what he lacks in fundamental defense he makes for with speed and heart. Berto's back story is one of classic determination and appreciation for his country. An exciting boxer to watch as well as an admirable man. ESPN's Dan Rafael : "I'm devastated by everything currently happening in Haiti," Berto said Wednesday. "As everybody knows, I have a lot of family members in Haiti and proudly represented Haiti in the 2004 Olympic Games. Like many other Haitian-Americans, my family and I are working to reach my loved ones. From what we have learned to this point, some of my family members are still missing and we have already been informed that members of my f...

Eff Pat Robertson

Ta-Nehisi Coates is pissed at the clip in my previous post , of Pat Robertson (via Media Matters ): The next time your wondering why there are so few black Republicans, consider the fact this unreconstructed Confederate was not long ago one of their greatest crusaders. Consider that he is equating the resistance of slavery, with a rejection of Christ. And there's an African-American right next to him, nodding in agreement. Fuck Pat Robertson. Fuck the "Christian" Broadcasting Network. And fuck any black person who'd nod reverently while a white supremacist slanders our founding fathers. She should be ashamed of herself. I think that pretty much sums up how most people feel. You can find more on Haiti and their deal with the devil here . Robertson must think slavery is the work of God.... Get Your Dunkin Wednesday

Yesterday while killing some time before Drinking Liberally I decided to walk in a quirky poster shop off Belmont. I was looking for nothing, but then I stumbled upon American Born Chinese , a graphic novel by Gene Yang. Now I had heard about this book last year sometime, for some reason I had never picked it up, but it was sitting there staring at me so I had to get it. Boy am I glad I did. American Born Chinese encapsulates the Asian-American ( as well as the American immigrant) story with simplicity, humor and intelligence. I am a fanboy of the graphic novel genre and so my expectations were rather high, ABC exceeded them quite surprisingly. I don't think I have ever read something that gets at what it is like growing up Chinese (or Asian for that matter) in America so cleanly. Yang with his illustrations and humor has given me a story to read to my kids (when I decide to have kids) and I am forever grateful for that. Instant classic. (for good measure more parenthesis) Here a...
