I've spent most of my day working my ass off. I don't get paid much for the amount of work I put in, it's frustrating and I'm quite exhausted. (Apologies for my time away of late) So when I arrived at my humble abode tonight I had every intention to sit and type. I wanted to write tonight about education in America, about television and writing Asian-American characters; I wanted to write about affirmative action and white privilege, about the election and being a part of the "other" 47%. Alas, tonight I won't write about any of those things. Instead, I'm stuck on music. Music that inspires, challenges and in a way haunts me at this moment. I say haunt because when you listen to an album sometimes you come to a realization that you've yet to reach your potential. It's been a surprising long week. I'm averaging one major audition a month, by major I mean it would change my financial sorrows, but as with anything in acting it really is out of my hands. I've now become accustomed to doing well in an audition and never hearing a peep. On the flipside, I'm used to flubbing an audition (or what I think is a flub) and then getting called back. Such is the nature of the biz. Hopefully my latest project will be up on the interwebs soon enough. I'm aching to share it. I was introduced to this band by an acting buddy. The entire album has this kind of infectious groove. And with various vocal appearances by some of the most talented performers, you get one of my favorite albums of the year. I could've picked a couple of different tracks from this album and undoubtedly you would have liked all of them, but this so happens to be my fave. Enjoy! And it begins! With, predictably, music and the best songs of 2011. So the first in this installment is Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues . This song hits on all the ethereal notes of phenomenal folk music. Fleet Foxes released such a strong album and this so happens to be the defining song as well as the album's namesake, Helplessness Blues . There's a reason it was nominated for a Grammy, it is simply that good. I've been writing a lot late at night. It seems to be the best time for me creatively. Throughout the process I search for music that inspires or centers my mind. Songs that bring me back to certain places mentally, so I can channel the mood or feeling that I want specific characters to convey. I know it all sounds ridiculous. I agree, don't get me wrong, but it's what I have to do for whatever reason to put my ideas to puter. Through my search I stumbled upon an album that I had forgotten A) How rockin it was and B) How it helped me grieve and grow. Benton Falls was there for me. Emo. Yes, but I don't care. At the moment in my life when this album was released I was regressing. Unsure of myself, I felt it best to drink, conform and try to escape the tragedy of years past. I had the chance to interview two members of the LA band Colombian Necktie. Take a listen and get to know this band as they are truly in West Coast terms EPIC. Bio : LA's Colombian Necktie have been together for just over a year and have quickly made their mark on the flourishing West Coast hardcore/punk/metal scene. The music is honest to its core, like the band's D.I.Y. ethics and beliefs. They are successfully bridging gaps between subgenres and constantly experimenting with sound and feel, which can be heard on their negatively charged self-titled EP. And the intensity doesn't stop there; Colombian Necktie's live show is chaotic, unafraid and destuctive. Fueled by creativity, aggression and passion, Colombian Necktie is a force of nature that isn't slowing down anytime soon.
