Summing Up the Democratic Party

Political Wire:

Moments before a conference call with reporters and "apparently unaware that many of the reporters were already on the line," Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) "began to instruct fellow senators on how to talk to reporters about the contentious budget process," the New York Times reports.

Schumer told them to portray House Speaker John Boehner (D-OH) "as painted into a box by the Tea Party, and to decry the spending cuts that he wants as extreme."

Said Schumer: "I always use the word extreme. That is what the caucus instructed me to use this week."

"A minute or two into the talking-points tutorial, though, someone apparently figured out that reporters were listening, and silence fell."

That's it pretty much. It's embarrassing that Schumer even has to remind the caucus how to speak in a situation where the Democratic Party has the upper hand. If only they knew how to mute themselves...

I've never understood how the Dems ceded ground to the Republi-CONS so as to render themselves timid.

And I'm a little fed up with both sides having their talking points. But the Dems should really stay on message about what this country is turning into: a plutocracy. Welcome to the new Gilded Age.

But they can never seem to win the argument about taxes or social spending or the nature and role of government because they've let the right wing tarnish them for the last 20 years over these issues.

If Dems speak from their hearts about why there needs to be fairness in our society, about who cares about the little guy, then there wouldn't be these robotic talking points that don't get thru to anyone.
