It's About Being More American

Steven Benen on a Republican stunt to read the Constitution out loud to kick off the 112th Congress while also imposing bill sponsors to "define" the powers to enact legislation:

But there's a problem with this: it's crazy. We are, after all, talking about a House Republican caucus with leaders who support allowing states to overturn federal laws they don't like.

In recent years, congressional Republicans haven't just endorsed bizarre legal concepts; they've advocated constitutional concepts that were discredited generations ago.

Worse, they have ambitious plans to shuffle the constitutional deck more to their liking. During the campaign, we heard from a variety of bizarre candidates, many of whom won, who talked about scrapping the 17th Amendment, repealing the 16th Amendment, getting rid of at least one part of the 14th Amendment, "restoring" the "original" 13th Amendment, and proposing dozens of new amendments.

Similarly, these same officials intend to radically transform the country as we currently know it, identifying bedrocks of society, and declaring them not just wrong, but literally unconstitutional.

For these guys to somehow claim they've cornered the market on constitutional fealty is ridiculous, and arguably, backwards. Stunts and legislative gimmicks won't change this.

All in all I've come to understand that the Right believe they have ownership of what is American. The Constitution, therefore is up to their interpretation and theirs alone. It would be nice to think otherwise, but that's how they operate. They are the real Americans, the Left are hijacking the country and they won't let the Left hijack the Constitution. Don't Tread On Deez and such as also too.

As for their ability to spit on the Constitution; we have a recent history that says they take no issue when their guy is treating it all willy nilly like.

One more day and we're off to Baltimore. The snow is fading away in Chicago. It's beginning to rain, it looks rather dreary and much less Christmasy. It will be good to get out again. The Skins game moved to the late day game which means more time for tail gaiting! In other news next month is going to be a full on blitz. Lots of work to be done. New episodes of TAT to record. And new announcements for this blog. Exciting!

Lauryn Hill returns or has she? What I've always wondered is, how she could ever "come back?" I don't think it's possible because of the peak she reached all those years ago was stratospheric. Hip-hop during her time was at its prime and her neo-soul infusion of the genre was like nothing else. I will always welcome her voice, but as much as I want her to return to greatness, I doubt it'll happen. But man would I be excited if it did happen.

Although...I liked everything a little too much...I overate! I'll post Food P0rn pics later today which reminds me, as this year comes to close there are a few things I'm going to start doing more next year. One of those things is Food P0rn. Haley's Vomit

So the Republican Governor of Mississippi born in 1947 has a history of consorting with racists...AND he doesn't apologize for it. Well I do declare, color me surprised (fanning face incessantly while wearing my white gloves).

I do hope Haley Barbour runs for president of the Southern States. It would all be so much like the good ole days. You know when Boehner's tears were over the joy of seeing blacks and whites drink from separate fountains and attend separate schools. When the N-word wasn't just for rappers and the occasional off kilter right-wing talk show host. When white guys could play golf without Tiger Woods dominating the greens. You know America *without those pesky ferners and colored peoples.

All this talk of the good ole days makes me want to get some lemonade and crank up my Skynyrd to 11! Hee-haw!

When people in the White House ask me whether I think Obama's SOTU address should be about tax reform or Social Security reform (i.e., 2/3 Social Security benefit cuts, 1/3 tax increases offered by the administration--and God alone knows what happens after that), I want to say: Why not make the SOTU address about jobs and economic recovery?

I know only the serious people in the Beltway talk about Social Security cuts and teh "tightening of the belts" what have you. But, we aren't exactly in full on recovery mode. After the DADT victory you'd think the White House would shift to getting people jobs by any means...oh well Larry Summers says we should bow to him. Job well done. Will look something like this for the remainder of the season.

Donovan McNabb deserves better. Here's hoping he gets his due respect and lands on a team where the coaches don't scape goat him. Playing injured for most of the season with sub-par talent around him the majority of the season, that's Redskins' football. It's something the Shanahans obviously know nothing about. What a disappointing end. The McNabb jersey's on sale already...

I'm doing the stay in and chill thang today. Laundry, physical therapy exercises and cleaning. It's the Cowboys and I can't even bare to watch, how depressing is that?

What We're Dealing With

Sociopaths:

On Thursday, the House took up the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010. The bill would ensure that child marriage is recognized as a human rights violation, and develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such marriages around the world. The legislation seemed likely to garner strong bipartisan support in Congress, and in the Senate, it did. But last night, the bill was voted down in the House by Republicans who argued the bill is too costly and could lead to increased abortions -- gripes the measure's supporters say have no basis in reality and are just excuses to kill the popular bill.

They just gave away almost $900 billion in tax cuts to the wealthy yet voted against a human rights bill that may cost $68 million! I guess some of these guys have secret marriages to children? Or at least a creepy uncle with one? How the fugg else do you rationalize this sick, twisted political game? It is disgusting.

I would say I am surprised, but at this point I believe they would vote against the cure for cancer if it meant sticking it to the Obama and the Democrats. Also too, where are Boehner's tears now?

The Walking Dead Decade

Krugman:

Ever since I began writing for the Times — and probably before, but I wasn’t paying so much attention then — I’ve been struck over and over again by the unkillability of zombie lies.

I mean, supply-side economics should have been killed by the Clinton years: he raised taxes on the rich, everyone on the right predicted catastrophe, and what followed was 8 years of rapid growth and surging revenues, with the budget actually moving into surplus for the first time in three decades. But no: the right interpreted all the good stuff as a lagged effect of the 1981 tax cut (which meant that LBJ deserved credit for Morning in America, but who’s counting?)

I often wonder out loud the same thing. How is it possible that we are still having these discussions? It's as if we're debating with a broken record.

I am Frank Chow and I approved this message

Fast Track to Repeal

Greg Sargent:

Will there be enough time to vote on repeal before the end of the lame duck session?

As a matter of fact, there is a simple way that Reid can make the time necessary to ensure this gets done, aides involved in the discussions tell me. Reid needs to schedule a debate and vote on DADT repeal beginning as soon as this weekend, once the issue over government funding is resolved. Reid can do this before New START is resolved, or at least while it's getting resolved.

On MSNBC just now, Joe Lieberman called on Reid to fast-track DADT repeal in this fashion. "I believe instead of going back to the START treaty, we should go to the independent stand-alone repeal of don't ask don't tell Saturday night," Lieberman said. "We can get it done by Monday, maybe Tuesday at the latest, and then go back to the START treaty."

Lt. Dan Choi Breaks Down

Weighed by growing heartache and his persistent desire to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell.

Andrew Sullivan from Dan Choi:

I wanted you to know because you are important to me and I think you can explain my situation best to those in our community who may be still interested. I was involuntarily committed to the Brockton MA Veterans Hospital Physchiatric Ward on Friday Morning after experiencing a breakdown and anxiety attack. ...

I did not initially want to publicize this but I now realize it is critical for our community to know several things: veterans gay or straight carry human burdens. Activists share similar burdens, no activist should be portrayed as super human, and the failures of government and national lobbying carry consequences far beyond the careers and reputations of corporate leaders, elected officials, high powered lobbyists, or political elites.

They ruin lives. My breakdown was a result of a cumulative array of stressors but there is no doubt that the composite betrayals felt on Thursday, by elected leaders and gay organizations as well as many who have exploited my name for their marketing purposes, have added to the result. I am certain my experience is not an isolated incident within the gay veteran community.

At the same time, those who have been closest to me know that I truly appreciate their gracious help and mentorship. I am indebted to their hospitality and leadership.

As Sullivan writes "the view will be better soon." Choi has been tirelessly drawing attention to the injustice that is Don't Ask Don't Tell and through that has exposed over and over again the civil rights denied to the LGBT community. Those who continually block progress will be remembered as being on the wrong side of history. They might have their small victories here and there, but it is only a matter of time. If it's any consolation history will not look upon them fondly. They won't be remembered as heroes like Choi, but rather short-sighted and bigoted.

Here's wishing Lt. Dan Choi a quick recovery and much deserved rest.

Texas Sized Stupid

I say let them secede:

Texas State Rep. Aaron Peña, of the state's 40th district, is expected to switch parties today, thereby giving Republicans a super majority in the Texas house, The McAllen Monitor reports.

Peña was first elected as a Democrat in 2002 and ran unopposed this year. He will bring the GOP to 100 members in the 150 member House. But Peña is actually the second Democrat to flip this week. State Rep. Allan Ritter, who also ran unopposed in November, announced this weekend that he would join the GOP, and is scheduled to appear at a news conference today alongside Gov. Rick Perry and Texas House Speaker Joe Straus. The Dallas Morning News reports that State Democratic Chairman Boyd Richie has called on Ritter to resign.

Republicans gained 22 seats in the Texas House in November, and a special election is being held
today to fill the seat of Republican Rep. Edmund Kuempe, who died of a heart attack after last month's election. A win there would give Republican 101 seats.

That's the next practical move. Any Democrat who switches parties during this era was never a Democrat in the first place. The differences between the two parties have never been so stark. Wonder when Gov. Rick Perry will be anointed King of Texas?

Teabaggin' Freedom

Allen West aka Freedom Fighter 4 Life wants to censor teh librul mediduh:

The government should censor news agencies that report on US documents leaked by websites like WikiLeaks, according to a tea party-backed Republican who will soon represent the 22th district congressional of Florida.

Speaking with an online radio station, Rep.-elect Allen West said that attacks on the US were not limited to "a bomb or an airplane flying into a building," but could occur "through cyber attacks" or "through leaking of very sensitive classified information."

"Regardless of whether you think it causes any harm, the fact that here is an individual that is not an American citizen first and foremost, for whatever reason gotten his hands on classified American material and put it out there in the public domain," West continued. "And I think that we also should be censoring the American news agencies which enabled him to do this and also supported him and applauding him for the efforts. So that's kind of aiding and abetting of a serious crime."

Ron Paul (Yesh THAT Ron Paul) had the appropriate reply:

"In a free society we're supposed to know the truth," Rep. Paul said. "In a society where truth becomes treason, then we're in big trouble. And now, people who are revealing the truth are getting into trouble for it."

That Was Fast

I thought everyone hated Obama and the Tax Cut Deal. I guess it took one weekend to forget he is a sell-out who doesn't fight for us or something.

Political Wire:

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that 69% of Americans back the tax deal negotiated last week by President Obama and congressional Republicans.

Large majorities of Democrats, Republicans and independents alike favor the agreement -- including 69% of liberal Democrats.

Now of course the wording of these polls matter and really it won't get people to simmer down now. Regardless, maybe the American people do get what is at stake here.

This is the part where I write that Obama needs to juice his pecs, then go tanning and then cry on 60 minutes. That's what real leaders do to convince Americans they care about kicking children out of schools and deserve to starve! The tears of childhood dreams crushed by tax cuts for the rich! And also too, can you tell I'm exhausted with this Obama's "weak" meme?

People on the right who want to cut Social Security will always make a fiscal argument for doing so, talking about how it no longer pays for itself. They will do so no matter where the payroll contributions are set, and they would do so even if they remained untouched. Meanwhile, people on the left who want to save Social Security will scream bloody murder any time anybody suggests even something as small as raising the retirement age in 50 years’ time. Trying to get these two camps to come to agreement on anything will always be impossible. And I fail to see how adding the general fund to the payroll tax as a contributor to the Social Security trust fund is going to change that dynamic.

Mike Konczal reckons that we would be better off, politically, with a tax rebate out of the general fund rather than a reduction in payroll withholding. But that ignores the behavioral economics of the reduction in the withholding tax: people are more likely to spend a relatively invisible increase in their take-home pay, and they’re more likely to save, or deleverage, with a one-off rebate check from the government.

The debate, in a year’s time, about whether we should let the payroll-tax cut expire is going to be a fascinating one to watch. But I don’t think it’s going to have much if any effect on the future of Social Security.

But go ahead blame Obama for delivering the final blow to the end of Social Security. It gets so much accomplished...

Get Your Dunkin Monday

This is my last week of work before I get to take two weeks off. I'm hoping 2011 brings many new adventures and risks worth taking. Yesterday I was snowed in with my lady. We literally didn't get out of pajamas at all. I've got no shame. We cooked, we cleaned, we chilled and mostly just wondered when the snow would stop. I hate winter again. It's friggin nine degrees out! Tomorrow is WAR ON CHRISTMAS, us Drinking Liberally fellows will be getting together and enjoying yule logs or something of that nature. Be on the look out this week for Episode Four of the Trans-Atlantic Throwdown.

Here is your one highlight:

After yesterday's roller coaster of a week. This week doesn't look to be much better, however I suggest to everyone to take a step back. Breathe. Then read this:

What Progressives Don't Understand About Obama
(h/t Balloon Juice)

All this primary talk needs to stop. It's time to get focused and remember it's imperative we stop the Republican controlled House from reversing the progress we've made the last two years. And believe me they'll try their darnedest.

Redskins Play Today

And I refuse to watch. Every year is a rebuilding year. Le Sigh.

At least the Bears are playing the Patriots. It will be a real test for both teams. I'm hoping the Bears put Tom Brady in a hurt locker.

Update: They were who we thought they were. Only the Redskins can get an extra down, score a TD and still find a way to lose. *Le Super Sigh

Up Early

The lady woke me up early today because like all sane people she feels everyone should be up and at it when she's up. She made the coffee. I nuked the Turkey Bacon, made scrambled eggs and added Frontera tomatillo salsa. We had toast on the side. It's becoming our Saturday default breakfast. Easy, simple and delicious.

It's a gray and hazy in Chicago. The lake isn't frozen. I'm beginning to like winter again. Don't quote me on that, I'll change my mind tomorrow most likely. We'll be recording episode four of Trans-Atlantic Throwdown shortly. Then it's off to do a bunch of shopping and errands. GOTTA DIG THE CAR OUT!

Aside from Tbogg, reading Firedoglake these days is like a soap opera-esque message board for emo progressives. If they spent half as much time rallying against Republicans and organizing the Left as they did Uniting the Colors of Grovercon and lamenting the BIGGEST SELL OUT EVER Obama teh Smoker; they might, you know, get somewhere. Get Your Dunkin Friday

Well yesterday was a roller coaster, huh? With the Defense Appropriations Bill being brought to the floor of the Senate all eyes were hoping "Don't Ask Don't Tell" would be repealed. It failed. Flat on its face. Heck it didn't even pass go. There were cowards like Joe Manchin of West Virginia (timing really? timing?! is this the 1960's?!) and Mark Kirk of Illinois. There were boneheads like Blanche Lincoln, BLANCHE!! And there was the Republican Party in general who in one day voted against equality, and against health care for 9/11 first responders. Why? Because they are sociopaths who ultimately will be on the wrong side of history. Regardless it was an exhausting day of events. Last night was my lady's work party and we rocked it. It was at some underground lounge in the Viagra Triangle, but we had a good time with her work folk. I'm kind of hungover, luckily work this morning had bagels. Mmmmm bagels and I got myself sausage bites from Dunkin because it's Friday mmmmm sausage bites.

Here are your highlights:

Will the Payroll Tax Cut Threaten Social Security?

Glenn Beck is fucking crazy and getting scarier each day

Um is this a good idea? Doc Oc!

Mark Kirk remember that guy? The one that beat Alexi? You stupid asses, I told you he was who we thought he was, Voted against paying for health care costs for 9/11 first responders. Freedom fighter!

Obama Breaks Away. Senate unleashes the CRACKEN! Obama's Tax Cut Deal Price Tag. Today will probably be less up and down as yesterday because well Congress ain't doin much. It's Friday...at least Bernie Sanders will be raging!

I have an ongoing headache and I've yet to figure out why. Yes, I've taken Advil, Ibuprofen and I even tried Aleve. Keeps coming back. If it persists I'll probably go to a doctor...nawwww. Tonight is my lady's work party at a club. Yes an oomps oomps bow chicka wow wow club. Hey, when in Rome, right? I'll probably be in a hurt locker tomorrow. It never fails. One part of the holidays I always loathe is the overload of parties and get togethers and get together and parties. I wish I could have just one big one and be done with it. Am I alone on this one?

Eleventy Dimensiony Chess

Sully finds a reason to Meep on the Tax Cut Deal:

The most powerul aspect of this entire deal is how it has delivered a body-blow to the FNC/Limbaugh/RNC notion that Obama is an enemy and an alien and a threat. Instead, he's now the architect of a deal with that most rightwing of Republicans, Mitch McConnell, a deal that legitimizes Obama on the right with consequences McConnell probably hasn't completely absorbed yet. Maybe this was an inevitable consequence of the GOP assuming some responsibility in running the country. But it has pricked that balloon of demonization that has given much of the right its energy these past two years.

Meep, meep.

He does have a valid point. Not sure if that was Obama's intention all along, but it certainly poses a problem for the GOP. A problem they've brought upon themselves nonetheless.

Now if I was a PR guru of the Teabaggers of Nationism, I would be railing against everybody under the sun whether it's the Obamanator aka Socialist-Swine of Capitalist-Kenya or McConnell the Sellout-Out-Closet-Hippie-Gay-Loving-Former-Slave-Descendant-Reparations-Yankee. Then I would get the Bachmann's and DeMint's of the world and shower them with adulation hoping they repeal the 14th amendment which we all know let's anchor terror babies steal kids lunches and make them eat healthy food! Meanwhile I'd be doing my best to stack my bunker full of can goods, Bible clippings, Beck University school books and Easy Mac in order to be fully prepared for the Gaypocalypse round the corner in Illinois. I done tell you this America is going to the hell!

Obama States He Is Obama

Progressives react:

Not sure why anyone is surprised by this, but I welcome such a candid display from our president. The progressive blogosphere will continue to ignore his digs at the Republican party likening them to "hostage takers" as will the media. It will simply be "Obama tells off liberals who thought he would be the Black Noah" or something. I'll be happy when people calm down a bit. He did what he had to do and he is who he always said he was.

Tax the Rich, Save America

Steve M. states what progressives need to do in light of the recent Tax Cut Deal:

Well, it would nice to believe that Democrats would actually use two years to devise and deploy a strategy that will change the terms of this debate. Do you think they'll manage it? Me either.

But maybe that's what the rest of us need to do. Shouldn't outside groups be trying to foment class warfare, on the assumption that it should be done whether Democrats get on board or not? That's how successful progressive movements have worked historically -- not in lockstep with Democrats, and not primarily as sworn enemies of Democrats, but on the principle of "Here's where we stand; join us or don't -- we're marching anyway."

This should be our tea party -- there should be groups spring up all over the country with names like Tax the Rich. Activists need to make more activists out in the heartland, on the principle that the well-to-do have done well while the rest of us have struggled.

I'm having a naive fantasy, of course -- much more energy will probably go into a "PRIMARY EVERYBODY!!!" movement. But a fella can dream, can't he?

I know it's a pipe dream, but it's what we need. Perhaps someone like Markos once he's done with his emo-fest can mobilize the effort. Or maybe MoveOn, what do they do again? As Steve M says, nobody historically was waiting around to get policies passed, they marched.

The President Said It Himself

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Read the president's remarks.

He painted himself as the grown-up in the debate, as the one above the fray and it's a smart move. I don't agree with allowing the tax cuts to be extended longer than the unemployment benefits nor do I think the estate giveaway is good policy. However weighing everything it's better than I previously thought would be accomplished. The tax cuts for the middle class pass while the payroll tax cut is a nice new shiny object that has potential for job creation. Now all of this is of course if Lucy doesn't pull the football away...

Regardless the GOP is clearly the protectors of the rich and overtime I think this is a simpler argument to make as the economy recovers. Another element is that the self-proclaimed deficit hawks within the Republican Party look foolish. They can't claim they care about the deficit seriously with a hand out to the top 2%, the president did emphasize that. As with most presidents this debate (within two years of an election) has turned into a play for 2012 not for the now some might have hoped. It's in the now as it remedies the unemployment benefits and middle class tax cuts, however a political KO it's not. Expect more "bipartisan" and "above the fray" pragmatism not less going forward (Firebaggers heads will roll and depending on the subject I might RAGE!, but I get it, don't have to like it, but I get it).

So what's next? I await the results, but hopefully when the dust settles the logical heads will prevail. It's always pertinent to remember what's at stake and I think the Republicans might have finally overplayed their hand...speaking Frankly only.

Redskins v. Giants Today

Due to my schedule and teh local teevee, I won't be able to watch the game.

My prediction: Our lack of running game and weapons at wide receiver will lead to another abysmal showing on offense. The 3-4 defense will look like it has all year. Also too and such the laundry list of injuries we have accrued over the last three weeks doesn't help. We don't have the youth to step in. We don't seem to have an alternative game plan anywhere.

Re-building weighs on us fans.
